Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf has been by the Financial Times in the article “US pivot to forced labour sanctions has implications for western companies.” The article reports on a new focus by the United States that could move human rights issues into the trade realm.

According to the FT, Washington has become more aggressive on this issue, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo holding meetings in London this week to try to persuade British politicians to sanction Chinese officials over the oppression and detention of Muslim Uighurs. Also this week, the article says, the United States announced the addition of 11 companies to its Entity List, severely limiting how they do business with U.S. companies. Most of those companies, the FT notes, were linked to forced labor practices in China’s Xinjiang area.

Wolf, who ran the Entity List process while working at the Commerce Department in the Obama Administration, said he was confident this was the first time forced labor had been explicitly cited as the basis for such a listing.
