“Minn. ‘Foreign Influence’ Law May Bar US Cos. From Politics,” an article by Akin lobbying & public policy partner Melissa Laurenza, senior political law counsel & consultant Ken Gross and counsel Kevin Paulsen, has been published by Law360. The article takes a look into Minnesota’s recently implemented Democracy for the People Act (DPA) and its potential implications for domestic businesses involved in political activities.

According to the authors, the DPA is a comprehensive law that introduces significant changes to the state’s campaign finance and voting regulations. Among its provisions, the law imposes strict restrictions on businesses with foreign ownership, prohibiting them from making independent expenditures, contributions or expenditures related to state and local elections. The DPA’s broad definition of “foreign influence” raises concerns and may face legal challenges while businesses navigate compliance with the law’s provisions.
