Law360 has quoted Akin Gump senior counsel Jo-Ellyn Sakowitz Klein in the article “Privacy & Cybersecurity Policy To Watch For Rest Of 2018.”
One area of focus, Klein said, will be the Federal Trade Commission, which “will loom large in the latter half of 2018.” The commission, the article notes, is now operating at full strength for the first time in nearly three years.
While the FTC has already brought more than 60 cases alleging that companies failed to implement “reasonable” data security safeguards, Klein pointed out that its new chairman recently told a House subcommittee the commission planned to continue “to prioritize, examine and address privacy and data security with a fresh perspective.”
Separately, Klein addressed a new privacy bill in California that would require businesses to be more upfront with customers about the personal data they collect and give consumers wide latitude to control how companies use and share their personal information and to request its deletion. The article reports that businesses affected by the law can use the next six months to take stock of their data and where it’s located.
While these types of data mapping exercises aren’t “particularly sexy,” Klein said, they are crucial for compliance.
