Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf has been quoted in the MarketWatch article “China’s Great Wall interested in buying Jeep,” regarding Great Wall Motor Co.’s plans to make a bid for Fiat Chrysler’s Jeep brand.

The article reports that Great Wall has been open about its global ambitions, but has yet to make much progress outside of China. By making public its interest in Jeep, the company may be able to avoid running afoul of Chinese authorities since it would need government approval to get financing.

At the same time, the article notes, Fiat Chrysler could gauge the reaction such an acquisition would elicit from the Trump administration and in Congress.

“In a normal world, I wouldn’t imagine it would be difficult” to win U.S. government approval for such a sale, said Wolf, a former senior Commerce Department official in the Obama administration. But he said the current political reaction could sink the acquisition.
