Roll Call has quoted Akin Gump public law and policy partner Ed Pagano in the article “K Street eyes a return of earmarks to boost business.” The article looks at the potential impact of the likely return of member-directed federal spending.

According to Roll Call, if members of Congress do bring back the practice of earmarking appropriations bills, they are likely only to allow the federal dollars to go to nonprofit organizations and local governments. In addition, the money would probably be publicly disclosed as a way of preventing some of the scandals and corruption that led to their official demise in 2011.

Still, Pagano, a former Senate Liaison to President Barack Obama said, “For advocacy in general, it’s going to be a positive, another avenue of advocacy for our clients and another potential way for helping clients meet their needs and working with lawmakers and working on projects in their districts and states, on bills that are must-pass bills. It’s another option for them to achieve their goals.”
