Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf was quoted by The Washington Post for its article “Western suppliers cut ties with Chinese chipmakers as U.S. curbs bite,” which reports that Western suppliers have started cutting ties with certain Chinese chipmakers as a response to new U.S. export controls. It is common, the article notes, for Western companies to suspend exports in the wake of new U.S. restrictions then resume once they decipher those rules.

Wolf, who served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration, Bureau of Industry and Security, said that equipment suppliers, “are scrambling to find out what work Chinese fabs do.” He adds, “companies that don’t want to make a mistake or violate the law will pull back.”
