(Los Angeles) – Akin announced today that Gregory Dunlap, a former Special Agent in Charge in the Office of Export Enforcement at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has joined the firm’s international trade practice as a senior regulatory advisor. As an accomplished leader in directing national security investigations and global trade compliance programs, his addition further enhances Akin’s best-in-class national security and export control capabilities.

Dunlap brings more than 25 years of experience directing national security investigations, global trade compliance programs and intelligence operations, having served most recently as a Special Agent in Charge at the Office of Export Enforcement (OEE) where he oversaw export controls and sanctions investigations across multiple states and territories. He also spent more than eight years at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), including in the National Security Division, Counterintelligence and Export Control Section, where he managed investigations and prosecutions related to export controls and sanctions, espionage, cyber-espionage, unauthorized disclosures and foreign agent violations. While at the OEE and DOJ, Dunlap worked closely with Akin partners Jonathan Poling, Ryan Fayhee, George Pence, and Opher Shweiki.

“We want to continue to provide our clients with the best advice when advising on export control and sanctions regulations and in defending clients in trade enforcement matters. We are pleased to add an experienced practitioner of Greg’s caliber, with decades of experience at both the BIS and DOJ,” said Jonathan Poling, head of the firm’s international trade practice. “Greg is an excellent addition to our international trade team and will be invaluable to our clients on trade enforcement matters. He knows the regulations and how companies can address compliance expectations within BIS and DOJ as well as handle sophisticated, cross-border enforcement matters.”

Dunlap joins many other former senior government national security officials now at Akin, including Kevin Wolf, former Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration; Opher Shweiki, former BIS Chief Counsel; Jason Prince, former Office of Foreign Assets Control Chief Counsel; Sally Laing, former chief international trade counsel for Chair Ron Wyden and the Senate Finance Committee; Ryan Fayhee, former DOJ senior prosecutor and national security official; Thomas Krueger, former NSC Director Strategic Trade and Nonproliferation and State Department Senior Foreign Affairs Officer; Jon Poling, former prosecutor for the DOJ’s National Security Division, Counterintelligence and Export Control Section; and George Pence, former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California in its Terrorism and Export Crimes section. Earlier this month, the firm added Matthew Borman, former principal deputy assistant for Strategic Trade and Technology Security at BIS and Eileen Albanese, former director of the BIS Office of National Security and Technology Transfer Controls.
