Contact:
(Washington D.C.) – Akin announced today that Michael Wain has joined the firm as a senior policy advisor in the firm’s international trade practice in Washington, D.C.
Most recently, Wain served as Deputy Assistant Director for Policy for the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and previously served as Senior Sanctions Policy Advisor at OFAC. Earlier in his career, he served as a Deputy Team Chief and Senior Advisor in the U.S. State Department’s nonproliferation bureau, overseeing the launch of technical programs to improve international sanctions implementation and new agreements to pursue bilateral and regional cooperation to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
“At a time of continued heightened international trade policy volatility, Michael brings valuable experience developing and implementing U.S. economic sanctions, and engaging with industry, foreign governments and Capitol Hill to help our clients on matters involving sanctions, international trade policy and anti-money laundering rules,” said Jonathan Poling, head of the firm’s international trade practice.
“I’m excited to be joining Akin and its premier international trade practice,” said Wain on his move to the firm. “I look forward to reuniting with former OFAC colleagues Jason Prince and James Treanor and joining with new colleagues to advise clients on international trade, sanctions and anti-money laundering policies.”
Wain joins several other former senior government officials now at Akin, including Jason Prince, who previously served as Chief Counsel for OFAC; Opher Shweiki, former Chief Counsel for the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS); Matthew Borman, former Principal Deputy Assistant for Strategic Trade and Technology Security at BIS; Eileen Albanese, former Director of Office of National Security and Technology Transfer Controls at BIS; and Gregory Dunlap, former Special Agent in Charge of Export Enforcement at BIS’s Office of Export Enforcement.
