(Washington, D.C.) –Akin Gump is pleased to announce that it has received the 2015 Vincent Reed Education Award for its partnership with John Tyler Elementary School. The award, presented at the Washington Lawyers’ Committee annual luncheon, is given out each year to a Washington, D.C.-area firm in recognition of that firm’s contribution to public education in the District of Columbia.
The National Law Journal in its article “Washington Lawyers' Committee Honors Pro Bono, Civil Rights Lawyers” notes that, through the partnership, Akin Gump has helped the school “fund its library renovation, produce a toolkit to assist parents in fundraising and coach students in moot court competitions.”
Additionally, Akin Gump has worked to tutor students in reading and math, fund student field trips and special events, support the Tyler PTA and assist with major school capital projects and curriculum improvements. More generally, the firm also hosts luncheon meetings throughout the year on behalf of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (WLC) to recruit new firms and schools to the WLC’s school partnership program, now numbering over 50 school partnerships citywide.
Akin Gump is proud to have been recognized on other occasions by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for this work. In 2009, at the Wiley Branton Awards, the firm received an Outstanding Achievement Award for what was then a 12-year partnership with the school. Then, in 2011, Akin Gump partners Charlie Johnson and Stan Samorajczyk received the Vincent Reed Award for their work presiding over the Tyler partnership and for promoting school partnerships on behalf of the WLC.
Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
