(Los Angeles) – Rex Heinke, co-head of Akin Gump’s Supreme Court and appellate practice, has been named by Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California for 2018. Heinke, the publication notes, “has briefed hundreds of appeals, writs and substantive trial court motions and made more than 150 appellate arguments in state and federal courts across the country.”
Daily Journal cites Mr. Heinke’s work on a religious speech case that could reach the U.S. Supreme Court involving the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Represented by Mr. Heinke, WMATA is being sued by the archdiocese of Washington after it was blocked from showing pro-religion Christmas season ads on buses. After the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled in July in WMATA’s favor, the archdiocese filed for en banc review.
Mr. Heinke told Daily Journal, “I expect the archdiocese will go to the Supreme Court” if it loses. “They say religion speech should be treated differently, and people feel very strongly about religion.”
With eight more major appeals in the pipeline, this would be the latest in a string of Mr. Heinke’s cases to reach the Supreme Court. Last term, as Daily Journal notes, he and an Akin Gump team won a landmark victory on behalf of Ernst & Young LLP affirming the enforceability of arbitration agreements.
Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
