Resolution S 1007: Massachusetts Encourages Female Representation on Corporate Boards

October 21, 2015

Summary

S 1007, a non-binding resolution, was adopted by the state House and Senate in October 2015 and encouraged all companies, both privately held and publicly traded, to adhere to certain board diversity standards by the end of 2018: all corporate boards with nine or more members to have a minimum of three women directors; all boards with fewer than nine members to have a minimum of two women directors; and all companies to measure their progress toward a goal of equal representation of men and women in leadership positions. The resolution cites industry studies showing companies with women on the board financially out-perform similarly situated companies with fewer women on the board.
