SB 474: West Virginia Removes DEI Offices, Programs, and Initiatives From State Entities and Educational Institutions

April 12, 2025

Summary

SB 474 was passed in April 2025 and becomes effective on July 11, 2025. It requires the elimination of all DEI divisions, officers, programs, trainings, and policies from West Virginia’s executive branch, public K–12 schools, and public higher education institutions. It prohibits state agencies, boards, and educational bodies from establishing or maintaining any DEI-related roles or initiatives, including requiring diversity statements, hiring practices that consider DEI, or mandatory DEI training. The bill allows exceptions only for functions related to compliance with federal/state law and academic coursework or student activities, and directs that any remaining DEI funds be reallocated to scholarships or tuition relief.
