Akin Gump Honored with ACLU of Southern California's First Amendment Award

(Los Angeles) Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is pleased to report that, on June 8 in a ceremony in Los Angeles, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California honored the firm with its First Amendment Award in recognition of the collaborative work that Akin Gump partner L. Rachel Lerman, counsel Felix Lebron and associate Sarah Gettings, of the firm’s Los Angeles office, performed with the ACLU in Nee v. Los Angeles County.

The case, which is pending in federal court in Los Angeles, involves a First Amendment challenge to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s practice of using suspicious activity reporting guidelines to detain, search and arrest private citizens for taking photographs in public places and of public buildings.
