Akin Gump Named Among Law360’s Pro Bono Firms of the Year
(Washington, D.C.) Law360 has named Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as one of its 2013 Pro Bono Firms of the Year. The recognition honors law firms that “showed a steadfast duty to providing free legal work and secured notable victories for clients between June 1, 2012, and June 1, 2013.”
As part of its profile, Law360 interviewed Akin Gump pro bono partner Steven Schulman and litigation partner Michelle Reed.
Regarding her pro bono work, Reed noted, “When I started working as a lawyer, I was working a lot. I paused, and decided I needed to make provisions to help people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to get the services they needed. Honestly, it is what propels me forward into my practice, because these are the people who need access to justice.”
On Akin Gump’s commitment to pro bono, Schulman said, “The firm cares because the lawyers all care about it. I think the best lawyers and the people who really enjoy being lawyers want to be the people who know the rules to the game and who help people out. We want to be the people who know what’s going on, who give the advice, who help lead the people to the right solution.”
Among the engagements spotlighted in Law360’s profile are the firm’s work on behalf of: Dallas ministries who took the city to court to fight an ordinance that prevented them from feeding Dallas’ homeless on the streets; 250 Holocaust survivors and their relatives who want to sue a French government railroad for transporting more than 75,000 people to Nazi concentration camps; and Somali survivors of human rights abuses ordered by a former Somali defense minister.
