(New York) – Human Rights First, at its 2015 Award Dinner last night, honored Akin Gump, among others, for its “outstanding commitment to representing refugees and impactful pro bono work.” The Marvin Frankel Award, established in 2002, was created in honor of Judge Marvin Frankel, a founder of Human Rights First, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan international human rights organization.

Akin Gump was recognized for its work in “marshal[ing] incredible resources to secure the release from detention of many traumatized women and children, all of whom have fled persecution and violence in their home countries.” In August 2014, the firm formed the Karnes City Immigrant Family Pro Bono Project with representatives from educational and nonprofit organizations, including Human Rights First, to assist the Central American women and children being held at the U.S. government’s detention facility in Karnes City, Texas.

Akin Gump is proud to have had its contribution in this effort honored by Human Rights First. The firm’s Karnes City work has also been recognized by the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, via its 2015 Beacon of Justice Award, and the State Bar of Texas, via its Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee’s 2015 W. Frank Newton Award.

Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
