Akin Gump Three-peats as a Law360 Pro Bono Firm of the Year
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump is proud to announce that, for the third consecutive year, it has been selected among Law360’s Pro Bono Firms of the year, the publisher’s list of the top 20 law firms that “not only honors firms that donated their time and resources to important causes, from fighting family immigrant detention to advocating for marriage equality, but also overcame hurdles to nab major wins on behalf of their clients between June 1, 2014, and June 1, 2015.” This is the fourth time in five years that Akin Gump has been so honored.
Akin Gump pro bono partner and former Association of Pro Bono Counsel president Steven Schulman underlined the fact that “firms are continuing to make substantial commitments to pro bono work and really look at ways that their pro bono work can have the maximum impact possible.”
He said that, among the ways firms are helping those in need is, increasingly, by cooperating with competitor firms on pro bono matters: “One of the very important developments in the last few years has been firms really looking to where they can have the greatest impact and then collaborating among each other.” He added that firms have collaborated on domestic violence matters, as they sought to protect women and children to find support systems for them.

Mr. Schulman also noted that pro bono lawyers will continue to seek out potentially controversial cases when they see a need for their services, adding “Sure, there are areas where firms may decide as a matter of policy not to touch, but for the most part, firms are very willing to delve into all sorts of areas and advocate for social change.”
