In its special report “Law Firms Tackle Mental Health, One Initiative at a Time,” The American Lawyer featured several Akin Gump initiatives aimed at improving the mental health of its lawyers and staff.
The report looks at attorney mental health and high rates of depression, substance abuse and suicide in the profession.
Noting the firm’s Be Well wellness initiative, the article reports Akin Gump’s onsite behavioral assistance counselor, part of a program launched in the firm’s D.C. office in 2018 and slated to be implemented at each of the firm’s offices worldwide.
The article also covers the firm’s program to offer certification to lawyers and staff members in “mental health first aid,” an initiative that will be expanded to include all firm personnel by the end of next year.
In September 2018, Akin Gump signed on to the American Bar Association’s Well-Being Pledge Campaign targeting substance use disorders and mental health distress among lawyers (learn more here).
A member of the ABA President’s Working Group to Advance Well-Being in the Legal Profession, Patrick Krill worked with the ABA to develop this campaign. His conversation with Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith was featured in an episode of OnAir with Akin Gump, the firm’s podcast series (listen here).
