Bloomberg Quotes Stephen Kho on US Review of China Tariffs

For its article “U.S. to Begin Review of Tariffs on $300 Billion of China Imports,” Bloomberg quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho on an upcoming review by the Biden-Harris administration of the first group of tariffs imposed by President Biden’s predecessor on $300 billion in Chinese imports in July 2018.
According to Bloomberg, the law states that these tariffs expire four years after being imposed unless a review by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) analyzes their effectiveness and their consequences. The tariffs review needs to take place within 60 days of their potential end; for the first group—$34 billion in Chinese goods—the deadline in July 6.
Kho, a former associate general counsel and acting chief counsel on China enforcement at the USTR, said, “This isn’t something that can be ignored. You can’t just do this process in a half-hearted manner. The review will bring renewed interest in dealing with the Section 301 tariffs.”
The article also notes that Akin Gump is representing clients that have sued to have some of the duties removed.
