Former Federal Prosecutor Joins Akin Gump in New York

(New York, NY) - Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, L.L.P. is pleased to announce that Richard B. Zabel, former Chief of the Narcotics Unit in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York, has joined the firm’s litigation practice as a partner in New York. Mr. Zabel will focus on white collar criminal defense and civil litigation.

Mr. Zabel served for eight years as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. During his tenure there, he prosecuted a variety of cases involving, among other things, securities fraud, obstruction of justice, racketeering and narcotics charges, and he has argued numerous cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. Trials in which he has participated include United States v. Mitchell Brater and Michael Rosoff, United States v. Luis Felipe, a/k/a “King Blood,” et al., and United States v. John Gambino, et al. Mr. Zabel has received numerous awards including the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service and the Director’s Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. He received his A.B. summa cum laude in 1983 from Princeton University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1987. While in law school, he authored “Extraterritoriality: Two Recent Decisions on Securities Fraud and Narcotics Investigations,” which appeared in the Harvard International Law Journal. He previously was an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School. Mr. Zabel is a member of the New York Bar.
