Akin Gump intellectual property partner Fred Williams was quoted by Law360 for its article “Lenovo Convinces Judge To Nix Software Patents Under Alice” on a decision by an Oregon federal judge to strike down a pair of software patents asserted against Lenovo Inc.’s U.S. arm.

The judge ruled plaintiff Tranxition’s patents were invalid under the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2014 Alice decision and said, “Neither of the patent’s claims, whether read singly or in combination, state an inventive concept sufficient to satisfy the Supreme Court’s test for patentability of an abstract idea under section 101 of the Patent Act.”

Williams, who led the Akin Gump team representing Lenovo in this litigation, noted that the company was pleased with the judge’s opinion and order disposing of the case: “We believe it is the correct reading of the law and of the patents-in-suit.”
