Akin Gump Hong Kong partner in charge and Asia practice head Greg Puff was quoted by Legal Week for its article “Asia-Pacific M&A soars to highest levels and value since 2001.”

As the publication notes, pharmaceuticals, medical and biotechnology was a strong growth sector, notching the second-highest increase in deal flow as well as a 32 percent rise in value.

Puff noted, “The pharmaceuticals, medical and biotech sector I would expect to continue to show a high level of activity. This is because of the current pipeline of deals and the market noise about doing them as well as the strategic imperative to do more in that area. In China, in particular, there's some pent-up need to offer those kinds of products to the burgeoning middle class and upper class who can afford it.”

Regarding other sectors of interest, he said, “You might also expect to see more activity in the real estate sector, because you see some market fluctuation in the cost of capital—either to purchase real estate or to maintain real estate that's been purchased/developing real estate.”
