Inside Counsel for its article “The path toward becoming GC: New responsibilities, old challenges” noted Akin Gump corporate practice head Kerry Berchem as the moderator for “The role of the general counsel: New responsibilities and old challenges,” a session in the latest Project 5/165 workshop, which was held on May 7 at the firm’s New York office.

Project 5/165 is a series of invitation-only regional workshops designed to support and accelerate the development of women in-house lawyers.  Its name derives from the goal to have 165 women as general counsel in Fortune 500 companies within five years, according to the project’s website.

Among the topics covered were the importance of maintaining close relationships with the company’s senior leadership team, establishing legal budget credibility and being passionate about the company’s culture.
