Susan Lent, a partner at Akin Gump and leader of the firm’s infrastructure and transportation practice, was quoted in the IREI Investing in Infrastructure article “If at first you don’t succeed: The Trump administration’s infrastructure proposal fell flat, but infrastructure policy remains a priority.”
The article reports that President Trump’s proposed infrastructure spending plan could change the way the United States finances infrastructure projects in the future. One aspect of the plan calls for the federal government to sell or lease public assets to private entities, which would, according to the article, lead to more public-private partnership opportunities.
Utilizing the private sector for more infrastructure funding, according to the article, would also allow for a shift of economic burden away from the federal government. In addition, it would free up funds for new projects and allow them to get started at a quicker rate.
Lent sees other benefits as well from this type of program. “More federal investment in infrastructure,” she said, “also may spur opportunities for private investment in other types of projects like industrial real estate, intermodal facilities and commercial and residential real estate around new federally funded infrastructure assets.”
