Akin Gump entertainment and media practice head P. John Burke has been quoted by Daily Journal in the article “Hollywood’s long-distance relationship with China growing closer.”

The article reports that, following a big year for deals between Hollywood and Chinese companies, corporations based in China are showing greater interest in opening offices in the Los Angeles area. Burke said he saw a big surge in interest following the $235 million slate financing deal between Bona Film Group Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox, which was announced in November.

“It was really interesting because it was as though when that deal got announced we reached a tipping point. There does appear to be a heightened serious interest in Hollywood.”

Burke added that that interest is bolstered by a sense of urgency: “You get to a certain critical mass of deals and all of a sudden you’re worried about getting left behind.”
