Kim Koopersmith to Receive Thomas A. Mars Pathmaker Award

(New York, New York) – Kim Koopersmith, U.S. managing partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, has been named by InsideCounsel magazine as the recipient of the 2011 Thomas A. Mars Pathmaker Award. 

The award, named for the executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Walmart U.S., recognizes a law firm managing partner or law firm senior leader “whose courage, unyielding vision, integrity, conviction and authenticity has carved a groundbreaking path and laid a new foundation to accelerate the economic empowerment of attorneys of color or women in law firms.”  

Ms. Koopersmith said, “I am humbled to receive this award, particularly because it celebrates the tremendous accomplishments of Walmart’s Tom Mars.  His commitment to diversity and inclusiveness sets the bar high for all of us who work to ensure the recruitment, retention and promotion of women and minorities in the legal profession.”    

The Thomas A. Mars Pathmaker Award is one of several Transformative Leadership Awards to be presented to female legal industry leaders on May 24, 2011, in Chicago.  The winners were selected by a committee comprising general counsel from leading corporations and partners at top law firms.     

“We’re excited once again to recognize those whose efforts are opening doors for women in the legal profession,” said Cathleen Flahardy, editor-in-chief of InsideCounsel magazine.  “The National Awards Committee has selected an impressive and inspiring group of winners for our Second Annual Transformative Leadership Awards. By measuring what matters, we hope to play a role in increasing economic opportunities for women in corporate law.”

In addition to Ms. Koopersmith, winners of the Transformative Leadership Awards include Nadia Dombrowski, senior vice president and group head, MasterCard International, Inc. (Pamela L. Carter Award); Deirdre Stanley, executive vice president & general counsel, Thomson Reuters (Mary Ann Hynes Pioneer Award); and Carol Ann Petren, executive vice president & general counsel, Cigna (Anastasia D. Kelly Award).  Economic Empowerment Awards were presented to Ellen Bastier of Reed Smith; Kelly-Ann Gibbs Cartwright of Holland & Knight; and Teri Plummer McClure, senior vice president of Legal, Compliance & Public Affairs, general counsel & corporate secretary, United Parcel Service.
