Akin Gump energy partner Steve Davis was quoted by Law360 for the article “Japan Boosts Global Energy Game Post-Fukushima” on the topic of that country’s search for alternate energy sources, including renewable energy and liquefied natural gas, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear plant incident.
Davis noted, “The amount of investment we're seeing the Japanese energy and trading companies make outside the country is just astonishing. The Japanese energy and trading companies have been scouring the globe looking for LNG-related opportunities—I see nothing that's going to slow that down.”
Regarding Japan’s competition with East and South Asian countries—including India, whose GAIL Global (USA) signed, with Davis as lead advisor, a 20-year deal with Dominion that will provide direct access to the Marcellus and Utica Shales—Davis said, “These consumer countries—they're growing and they need energy. Japan is less so, but you can immediately see they have a lot of energy needs to cover and they're aggressively going about doing it.”
