(Washington, D.C.)  Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s Washington, D.C.,-based international trade practice scored a major arbitration victory under the U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement on behalf of the government of British Columbia (B.C.).

Along with co-counsel for the Canadian government, the Akin Gump team convinced the arbitration tribunal to reject all claims made by the United States that B.C. was underpricing beetle-killed timber and to rule that B.C. had not violated the anti-circumvention provisions of the agreement. The Akin Gump lawyers and co-counsel established that the U.S. government’s claims were without merit and that B.C. was fairly pricing the huge volumes of timber that had been damaged by the mountain pine beetle.

Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 850 attorneys in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
