Nikkei Asian Review has quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf in the article “Huawei turns to mobile chip rivals to beat US pressure.” The article reports that Huawei Technologies, faced with new U.S. trade restrictions against it, is seeking help from rival mobile chipmakers in an attempt to keep its consumer electronics business afloat.
According to the article, though, other chip developers may be wary of getting caught up in the trade skirmish between the United States and China, particularly after a State Department official said the United States will monitor to see if its export rules need to be changed further.
Wolf told Nikkei that he is not yet aware of efforts “to impose controls over exports by foreign companies of foreign-origin items that are not subject to current U.S. export controls even if destined to Huawei.” That said, he added that Washington may look for ways to impose such controls if such activity were to harm the United States’ ability to impose controls on trade with Huawei.
