FierceEnergy, in its article, “Sound-Off: Gina McCarthy confirmation delayed,” quoted Akin Gump partner and environment and natural resources practice head Paul Gutermann on the delay in confirmation of EPA Assistant Administrator Gina McCarthy.
Gutermann stated, “When Lisa Jackson took over EPA, the Democrats had the majority in both Houses of Congress, and legislation to control climate change was a major policy focus of the Obama Administration. Now, there is no chance for the passage of climate change legislation, and EPA has been engaged in considerable regulatory development under the Clean Air Act to control greenhouse gas emissions.”
He added, “EPA is going to play a major role in the pace and manner in which domestic sources of energy are developed and Assistant Administrator McCarthy's dispositions toward that development bear close scrutiny. Both Ms. Jackson and Ms. McCarthy are strong supporters of renewable energy and, as greenhouse gas control regulations are promulgated, the regulatory incentives for increased development of renewable energy will be there.”
