For its article “4 Big Energy Cases Yet To Be Decided In 2015,” Law360 quoted Akin Gump environment and natural resources partner Paul Gutermann on the upcoming ruling by a U.S. district judge as to whether BP Exploration & Production must pay $13.7 billion for its role in what Law360 notes is the largest oil spill in U.S. history, Deepwater Horizon.

Gutermann noted the significance and novelty of the case and discussed the judge’s initial ruling regarding the well co-owners’ responsibility for the explosion and oil spill: “Judge Barbier has made a number of rulings on issues of first impression. Perhaps the most significant, because it served as a building block for all that has come after, was his ruling on the source of the release.”
