(Washington, D.C.) – Institutional Investor has named Prakash H. Mehta, co-head of the private equity and investment funds practice at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, to its list of “10 Rising Stars of Private Equity and M&A Law.”

In identifying “the cream of the crop,” lawyers expected to “shape the private equity and M&A legal field in the years to come,” Institutional Investor sought nominations from investment banking, finance and legal professionals throughout the business world. The magazine then narrowed its list to 10 individuals it calls “the legal dealmakers of the future.”

Mr. Mehta represents a broad range of investment management clients, including investment banks, private equity and hedge fund sponsors, and institutional investors, including endowments, large foundations, multilateral organizations and multinational groups. He advises private investment fund sponsors and investment banks on all aspects of their business, from capital raising and fund formation to implementation of their business models via complex transactions. He also advises clients on manager-level transactions such as seed investments in private investment fund managers, the creation of asset managers through joint ventures, and spin-outs of existing asset management teams (including proprietary trading desks). In addition, Mr. Mehta advises clients on investment and financing transactions, evaluating, structuring and negotiating private equity-style investments (minority and control), exit transactions (strategic sale, recapitalization, IPO) and other M&A transactions (joint ventures, stock and asset sales).

Mr. Mehta was named as a leading private equity lawyer in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2008 and was recognized by The National Law Journal in 2008 as one of the “50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America.” He serves on the advisory board of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association, is a regular panelist at the Emerging Market Private Equity Forum, and participated as a speaker at the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development.

Mr. Mehta is a summa cum laude graduate of Georgetown University and a magna cum laude graduate of its law school.
