Quartz Quotes Hal Shapiro on Square Hire of Acting USTR

Online business news outlet Quartz quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Hal Shapiro on the hiring by mobile payments company Square of Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis to lead its international government, regulatory and policy efforts.
Regarding Marantis’ hire, Shapiro noted, “Trying to get banking and financial services regulations to embrace a new product, a new way of doing business, is always tricky in any environment, [but] particularly post-financial crisis.” Shapiro goes on to add that “There are certain areas that have been deregulated for many years” and that Marantis was more than qualified for the position.
