Nicholas Antonas, an associate in Akin Gump’s energy practice in London, has written the article “Brexit: A Hard or Soft Landing for Renewables?” which was published by Renewable Energy World. The article addresses the impact of the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union on the renewables industry.

Antonas writes that a “soft” Brexit, one in which the U.K. would see continued access to the EU’s single market, would mean “a continuation of current trends,” where EU/European Economic Area renewables targets “are legally binding in a way that pan-global climate change treaties like the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement are not.”

A “hard” Brexit, however, according to Antonas, would lead to further change with effects that could be felt in Europe and beyond. Still, he concludes, it is too early to say with certainty what the consequences of Brexit will be for the renewables sector, and more will become apparent during the negotiations over the terms of the U.K.’s exit from the EU.
