Akin Gump international trade partner Bernd Janzen was quoted by Reuters for its article “U.S. energy companies fume over rejected steel tariff exemptions,” on complaints by companies seeking to import necessary metal products and running into the Trump administration-imposed tariff on imported steel.

According to the article, the administration allows for exemptions, but the process has generated so many that the U.S. Commerce Department is overwhelmed by the response.

Regarding the crush of exemption requests, Janzen, who served in Commerce’s Office of the Chief Counsel for Import Administration before joining Akin Gump, said, “The Commerce Department is now hard-pressed to spend more than a few minutes reviewing each application.”
