Reuters has quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho in the article “U.S., Chinese trade deputy talks to start on Thursday,” previewing a new round of trade talks scheduled for later this week.
Last week, the article reports, President Trump delayed a tariff increase that had been scheduled for October 1 on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods, after China delayed tariffs on some U.S. imports. In-person talks aimed at resolving the trade war, the article adds, have not been held since late July.
Kho, a former official in the office of the U.S. Trade Representative, observed that economic factors are weighing on both the United States and China.
“Both sides are feeling the pain now. So an interim deal could be done, but if they’re looking for a comprehensive deal ... that will be very hard,” Kho said.
