Akin Gump pro bono partner Steven Schulman has been quoted in the Bloomberg Law article “Pro Bono Lawyers Face New World of Remote Work Due to Virus.” The article reports that many pro bono organizations and the law firms with which they partner are working hard to put in place the solutions and technology that will enable them to effectively represent clients amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Restrictions on gatherings and travel, the article notes, make doing certain work more cumbersome, especially with regard to asylum and immigration matters. Many courtrooms are closed and hearings are delayed or have been moved to phone or teleconference. Federal prisons have also banned visitors, including lawyers, the article says.
“There will be a major impact on low-income and marginalized populations, who will have many new legal needs that we will need to address in areas including public benefits, housing instability, and detention conditions,” said Schulman, who serves as co-president of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel, which includes roughly 250 attorneys and pro bono practice managers at the largest law firms.
