(Los Angeles, California) – Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP litigation partner Stephen A. Mansfield was appointed today by the Los Angeles Police Commission to a panel of distinguished Los Angeles lawyers and law professors that will review the Police Department’s response to the Rampart corruption scandal.

The 10-member Blue Ribbon Rampart Review Panel will examine the extent to which the Police Department and City of Los Angeles have identified and implemented the most important lessons of the Rampart corruption scandal and determine whether sufficient remedies are in place to prevent a similar event from occurring in the future. Mr. Mansfield previously served as deputy general counsel of an earlier panel, the Rampart Independent Review Panel.

An accomplished trial lawyer, Mr. Mansfield represents corporations and individuals in trials, arbitrations and government enforcement actions before federal and state courts and administrative agencies. His practice focuses on complex fraud litigation, class action defense, corporate and government investigations, and white collar criminal defense.

Before entering private practice, Mr. Mansfield served for 11 years as an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, serving as a senior litigation counsel and a deputy chief supervising complex high-profile white collar crime prosecutions. As the head of the U.N. War Crimes Investigations Unit, Mr. Mansfield supervised international investigative teams in war crimes investigations in Rwanda, which led to the United Nations’ establishment of a war crimes tribunal for Rwanda. He also investigated fraud and corruption in Bosnia for USAID and coordinated anti-corruption efforts in Lithuania and the republic of Georgia for the ABA.
