Vernon Jordan to Receive Human Rights Award

(Washington, D.C.) – Vernon E. Jordan Jr., senior counsel at Akin Gump, has been selected by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute as the recipient of this year’s Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award.

Established in 2002, the Shuttlesworth Award recognizes individuals for their service to civil and human rights causes around the world. It is named after the late Rev. Frederick Lee Shuttlesworth, a civil rights activist who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and led the fight against segregation and other forms of racism.

The award, to be presented November 21, is the highest honor bestowed on an individual by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Past recipients have included former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, journalist Charlayne Hunter Gault, U.S. Reps. James E. Clyburn and John Lewis, and the actor Danny Glover.
