Akin Gump senior advisor and former U.S. congressman Vic Fazio, D-CA, co-wrote an op-ed with former congresswoman Nancy Johnson, R-CT, published in Politico on March 11. Titled “Solutions to our manufacturing problems,” the article stresses the importance of using bipartisan approaches to policymaking in order to revive and stabilize the U.S. manufacturing sector.
Fazio and Johnson point to manufacturing of advanced technology products and the high-value, high-wage opportunities it creates as the “next wave of manufacturing.” In order for the United States to be competitive, the authors note that it needs to adopt a bipartisan agenda that features trade (attacking mercantilist policies through treaty enforcement and diplomacy), taxation (leveling the playing field by lowering the effective corporate tax rate), innovation (establishing a public-private network of “manufacturing innovation institutes”) and education and training (increasing the use of nationally portable, industry-recognized skill certifications).
