Recruiting and Pipeline Initiatives

At Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, we hire the best and brightest, seeking out talented lawyers with varied backgrounds, viewpoints and experiences. Participation and outreach are key, and the firm’s efforts go beyond recruitment of attorneys for our firm.

Not only does Akin Gump lead by its own example, but the firm also works to identify and provide opportunities to others in the legal profession and beyond through pipeline programs; by seeking out opportunities to collaborate with student affinity groups at the law schools at which we recruit; through collaborations with clients and through numerous community partnerships. Akin Gump is a leading supporter of pipeline programs such as Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (“SEO”) and several years ago the firm launched a diversity scholarship program.

Sponsors for Educational Opportunity

Sponsors for Educational Opportunity ("SEO") recruits diverse college students and recent graduates from across the country who are entering their first year of law school and places them in summer internships/programs in law firms and financial institutions. In these placements, SEO interns are exposed to the practice of law on a daily basis and get a firsthand view of law firm cultures.

Akin Gump’s participation in SEO is extensive. In the summer of 2016, Akin Gump hosted SEO interns in the New York, Houston, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. offices. In January 2016, the New York office hosted 120 participants of the SEO program at a Private Equity Clinic.

Involvement and Outreach

Examples of Akin Gump’s involvement with law student affinity groups and other organizations include:

  • Akin Gump recruits at the Lavender Law Career Fair and is an annual participant at the Harvard Black Law Students Association Rising 2L Job Fair.. In 2015, the firm sponsored the winter diversity reception at UVA Law School held by the Black Law Students Association. Lawyers from the New York office participate in Columbia Law School’s Firm Diversity Expo. In addition, the firm’s Washington, D.C. office hosts an annual reception for minority first-year law students from area law schools.
  • The firm partners with law student affinity groups at a number of law schools at which we recruit to support and participate in events. These organizations include Columbia Law School, Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia’s Black Law Students Association’s, Georgetown University’s Black Law Students Associations and Latino American Law Students Associations; Southern Methodist University’s Asian Pacific Law Students and Hispanic Law Student Associations; the University of Pennsylvania Law School’s Women’s Association; and the University of Texas’ Chicano Hispanic Law Students Association.
  • Akin Gump is a supporter of the Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program which places high-achieving inner-city high school students with legal employers for the summer and provides them with additional programming before, during, and after the summer designed to help them prepare for a legal career. The firm has hosted a Thurgood Marshall intern since the summer of 2013, and has also supported the program each year by hosting a Diverse Careers Panel for all interns to introduce them to various employment opportunities in the legal profession.
