Public Law and Policy > Legal Reform

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s representation of businesses extends beyond the needs of any one company to address the common needs of industry members and trade groups that wish to effect broad changes to federal law, regulation and practices. Our lawyers and advisors are at the forefront of collaboration with policymakers in Congress and the administration to improve legislative proposals, regulations or practices that have not kept pace with the global economy or business climate.

Akin Gump’s knowledge and experience in negotiating the complex political, legislative and administrative landscape recently produced patent reform legislation that was supported by a bipartisan group from the Senate, the House, the executive branch and industry stakeholders. The resulting law, The Leahy-Smith America Invents Act of 2011, represents the most comprehensive change to the U.S. patent system in nearly 60 years. We are also involved in developing legislation designed to curb litigation abuse by plaintiff’s trial lawyers and prosecutors against corporate America, including efforts related to asbestos litigation, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the qui tam provisions of the False Claims Act.
