Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho has been quoted in the BBC article “Why China is under pressure to make a trade deal,” which looks at what is at stake this week as negotiators from Beijing and Washington hold their highest level talks since the two sides struck a temporary truce to their trade war. The article reports that March 1 is the deadline to reach a compromise before tariffs go up again.

Despite the title of the article, the United States is also reported to be under pressure to reach a deal. U.S. companies in China, the article reports, have complained about the impact of President Trump’s tariffs on their businesses, but they want Washington to make a good deal.

“This administration has been willing to risk the health of the U.S. economy with tariffs,” said Kho. “So now that we’ve come this far, businesses want to take advantage of this moment and walk away from these talks with something significant. They will want to see China’s offer to buy more American goods along with promises of systemic changes.”
