Akin Gump pro bono partner Steven Schulman was quoted in the Bloomberg story “Older Attorneys Put in More Pro Bono Hours, Report Shows,” discussing a new American Bar Association report finding that older attorneys work more pro bono hours than younger ones. The report also says that larger law firms make it easier to do pro bono work than smaller ones.

Schulman said the findings are contrary to his two decades of experience in the pro bono field.  At Akin Gump, younger lawyers outperform their older peers two to one when it comes to pro bono hours.

Schulman stressed, however, that his experience is from that of a larger firm, where he said there is greater infrastructure and support in place to make pro bono possible. Most encouraging about the report, he added, is that 81 percent of attorneys said they have provided pro bono services at some point in their lives.
