For its article “Justice Breyer, under pressure from left to retire, takes the long view,” The Boston Globe quoted Akin Gump Supreme Court and appellate practice head Pratik Shah on Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

The article, in addition to tracing Justice Breyer’s career, discusses current pressure on the jurist to retire now in the face of a scenario in which current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in the event of a midterm GOP takeover of the upper chamber, blocks a nomination to the bench by President Biden.

Shah, a former Breyer clerk, said of the Justice, “He is a true believer in our democratic system. It is not just lip service with him.”

Shah added that, out of a lack of interest in one-upping his fellow Justices, Breyer often removed “zingers” from dissents prepared by his clerks.
