The Hollywood Reporter has quoted Akin Gump entertainment practice head Christopher Spicer in the article “U.S. Indie Films Threatened by Trump’s China Trade War.” The article reports that the trade war between Washington and Beijing is hindering the success in China of American independent films.

According to the article, the sales potential of many small and mid-budget American movies has dropped dramatically just as China’s appetite for such filmmaking appears to be on the rise. Releases from the larger studios, however, appear to be safe, with THR noting that few analysts believe Beijing will retaliate against any tariffs by blocking Hollywood’s biggest films.

“Marvel titles are still going to get released — there’s just too much money at stake for both sides,” said Spicer. “But other U.S. films will absolutely be affected by the trade war. All of the Chinese parties making these investments are now very cautious.”
