Clete Willems, a partner in the public law and policy practice at Akin Gump, appeared on the FOX Business program Mornings with Maria discussing the G-7 summit in England this weekend and a new Chinese law aimed at countering foreign sanctions.

Willems said he does not think “there were any hard commitments from the G-7 in response to the issue of Chinese forced labor.” While he credited President Biden for raising the issue, he said it’s too early to know whether it will lead to the results “we’d like to see.”

As for a new Chinese law targeting foreign sanctions against Beijing, Willems, a Former Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, said it was “another example where China doesn’t recognize that they’re out of step with international norms and they’re getting called out for it and that the appropriate response would be to change that behavior. Instead, they just attack those who raise these legitimate questions.”
