Pratik Shah Speaks with Thomson Reuters for Q&A on Current Supreme Court Term

Thomson Reuters Westlaw has published the article “Checking in on the Supreme Court: Q&A with Pratik Shah of Akin Gump,” the co-head of the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate practice. Shah discusses the current term at the Court and looks at what lies ahead in 2020.
The article notes that several hot issues are currently on the calendar for the Supreme Court, including gun rights, immigration, abortion and discrimination against LGBT individuals. Shah said the Court, perhaps, “sought to avoid an overly controversial docket following Justice Kavanaugh’s contentious confirmation hearings [in 2018]. But the result is a more loaded docket this term.”
Shah was also asked whether these cases foreshadow any significant changes to the legal landscape. Referring to the doctrine of stare decisis, he observed that there are “competing factions on how aggressively the Court should move when it comes to changing course.”
Other topics discussed in the article include the question of who will emerge as the Court’s new “swing” justice, noteworthy issues on the docket for the spring and the petitions that Shah is most closely watching.
