Akin Gump senior counsel Scott Johnson was interviewed on the Federal Drive podcast, a Federal News Network podcast, regarding the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC’s) October audit report of cybersecurity practices of electrical grid operators.

In the podcast, Johnson speaks about the recent annual audit report concluded that while operator’s cybersecurity practices mostly comply with legally required cyber measures, there are still potential infractions or weaknesses, and there can be penalties for these weaknesses, depending on the severity of the violation.

Johnson further analyzes the major recurring themes of the 14 lessons learned from the FERC audit, with reliability as the overarching concern. He also discusses the reliability standards developed by North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).

These audits are “really just another part of a much larger governmental effort to ensure that our electrical systems remains reliable in the sort of face of ever increasing cyber threats.”
