In its article, “Trump’s Trade Tariffs: You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” Bloomberg Businessweek has quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho addressing the issue of new tariffs being imposed by the Trump administration on solar panels and washing machines.

The article reports that, while the new measures could protect U.S. goods from unfair overseas competition, they could also spark trade wars that end up harming everyone. The World Trade Organization (WTO), as the article points out, permits countries to restrict imported products on national security grounds, but major trading nations have stopped short of invoking the provision for fear of collapsing the WTO entirely.

“The Trump administration needs to put forward a rationale” if it’s going to make a national security claim, said Kho, who added that he was uncertain what that rationale would be.
