Akin Gump litigation partner Susan Lent was quoted by Law360 for its article “New DOT Initiative Aims To Ease Hurdles For Emerging Tech,” on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s newly launched Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Technology (NETT) Council.
According to the article, the NETT Council will help guide developers of transportation technologies through regulatory requirements and expedite progress on their projects by cutting red tape.
Lent, who leads the firm’s infrastructure and transportation practice and co-leads its autonomous vehicles initiative, said she considers the NETT Council potentially promising, adding, “It’s a step in the right direction, because you have these technologies and these concepts where they don’t fit neatly within one of the transportation modal administrations [and] you have to figure out how are you going to regulate them.”
She added, “The idea of bringing representatives from the modes together [to] look at these transformational technologies and look at how you can let them go forward while still ensuring there’s no risk to safety is really important because otherwise you’d be able to do little demonstrations but you’re not going to really implement this type of project.”
